204 – Greenhut Mansion Carriage House
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed.
via an article about Joseph Greenhut in PEORIAmagazines.com: “Greenhut’s mansion on High Street at Sheridan (today officially 802 Sheridan) once featured a tall tower, a turret, and a glassed conservatory. The carriage house, decorated with white-painted cast iron horse heads, testifies to the grandeur of the original red brick architecture of the house.”
The only other reference to the Carriage House I could find is contained in the paperback Peoria – A Postcard History, which states that it was built in 1886, two years after the completion of the Greenhut Mansion.
You can read more about the Greenhut Mansion at NTPL#96, and the conversion to the Wolfner Apartments at NTPL#95.

I think this is the carriage house at the corner of Sheriden and Moss. The house would be on High street

I should clarify- I know quite a bit about the house and there is a lot of info available on it; as to the carriage house itself I don’t have as much info, but I’ll see what I can dig up.

The theme song to Mr. Ed quite often gets randomly stuck in my head for DAYS. Thanks a lot.

I know what the tower-y things are for, with the slats! They pulled warm air up and out, keeping circulation going, which kept the hay from getting moldy! (Great in summer, moderately suck-tastic in winter, as climate control goes.)

The actual mansion still has the old gas clothes dryer in the basement. It’s pretty cool how you had to slide the door out and put the clothes over the tube thingies. (Yes, I’m sure thingies is a word)

I live in the Greenhut Mansion. I park my car in the garage in the carriage house. The Mansion and the carriage house are both owned by the same people. The garage door on the left is now a 6 car garage. It still has the original woodwork from the carriage house days. The garage door on the right is a 1 car/storage space.
The carriage house currently has 5 nicely updated apartments.
