157 - Shelter in Glen Oak Park

I think the photo and the corresponding comments say enough.

One of 9 structures in Glen Oak Park designated a local historic landmark by the Historic Preservation Commission, pending council approval. Personally, I hope the council turns down the request and the Park Board, to quote Jonathan Ahl during his post city council roundup “gets their act together.”

Congratulations and thanks to Emtronics and thanks to Josh Harris for the suggestion.

If you take Route 90 east, you’ll pass Arrowhead Country Club on the way to Chillicothe. Just past this intersection heading North on Route 40 (formerly 88) is the town of Edelstein, home of the Historic Hub Ballroom.

Congratulations to “Bean Counter” for losing his NTPL virginity.

I personally like this photo.  The only thing missing is some tumbleweed blowing across the gravel lot…

153 - Powell Press Building, John Schwab Grocery

April 15th, 2007

Peoria_Landmark_153.jpg

The Powell Press Building, formerly known as the John Schwab Grocery, was moved with the help of Central Illinois Landmarks Foundation from it’s original location at 214 NE Washington to it’s current location at 110 NE Water St in 1997 and now houses the Peoria Riverfront Visitor’s Center.

It is the only pre-civil war commericial building remaining in Peoria, and according to [this] source, as of 1998, one of only three pre-civil war buildings still in existance Downtown.

Anyone know what the other two are or are they gone?

151 - Mailboxes and Parcel Depot

Peoria_Landmark_151.jpg

I’m flattered and somewhat scared that I have four year olds looking at my site, but Yooper Girl’s Daughter is right, it’s “next to Krispy Cream doo doo’s”.  Dan Dermody was more specific in that it is the “Mailboxes and Parcel Depot on Glen”.

To be exact, it is 2311 W. Glen Ave, in the same building as The School House, next to the Krispy Cream donut shop.

From what I can make out, the notes in the window say, running from top to bottom:

CLOSED: We are closed because the phone lines have been switched to the new location.  We will open at 9am on March 19 at our new location.

WE ARE MOVING!!! We will be moving across the street.

Please knock on window if no answer from bell.
