103 - USDA National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, aka The Ag Lab

Peoria_Landmark_103.jpg

I stumbled across this photo while doing research for another project and thought it was fascinating enough to publish. It’s a little grainy, I know. Below is a similar angle. Notice how small the original building was. If you drive by, you’ll see where the additions are. There is a cornerstone for the addition on the south side facing University; I think it said something in the 60’s, but I didn’t know at the time that I’d be using these photos for this purpose so I didn’t write it down.

Here’s the link for the original photo. It was taken at some point between the authorization for the USDA to build the Northern Regional Laboratory in 1938 and it’s opening in December 1940.

I’m guessing that Gary is a detective and Katney (who called it) works there.

Three days and not a single guess?

I’ll update with a more modern picture tomorrow.

Perhaps it’s somewhere along the river-I dunno. Can’t make out the printing on the sign. OK - Ivy Club?

  3. Gary Says:

I wouldn’t put it on the river. Doesn’t appear ot be in a valley.
Perhaps someplace up on the hill. At least three stories high … mature trees around … maybe something on the Bradley campus???

    The building stands prominently today.

  5. Katney Says:

The National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research would be my guess.

I was originally going to guess either the old Lovelace dorm at Bradley on Main Street, but it sits too far back on the street. Then my guess was the USDA lab, but it sits further back than the photo shows. Plus, from the look of the cars and streetlamp, I’m guessing the photo is from about 1915-1920, which is before either of those buildings.

Ah….maybe it’s Woodruff High School? No, I think that was in the 1940’s.

Which leaves me with Central High.

    Ok, I’m rambling.

I’m gonna guess some part of Methodist..or OSF St. Francis??

ok i’m not real good with streets… but it’s right before an overpass of 74 i believe… is that the building where they began mass producing penicillin?
