96 - The Greenhut Mansion
The Greenhut Mansion, as it appeared in the late 1800’s at the corner of High Street and Sheridan. It was built by whiskey baron Joseph Benedict Greenhut at a price of $50,000. According to this inflation calculator, it would cost $989,309 today.
Greenhut’s brother in-law William F. Wolfner purchased the house in 1912 and converted it into an apartment complex (see #95)

This looks like a very early phot of the house on the corner between I-74 and Berkley on Perry.

I agree with Mitch, but there is an ancient Greenhut mansion photo that looks nothing like the building today … This spooky house off I-74 is one of my favorites in Peoria. A couple years ago I stopped by because I saw people rehabbing it. I asked, in the spirit of historic preservation, etc., if I could see the house? They gave a curt “no” and shut the door.
Still am dying to see the inside of that house.

I believe you. Why else would PI have posted them together?
Anyone else but you, CJ, and I would still contest it.

Oh, that’s my house!
KIDDING. I wish!

I wouldn’t want to clean it. Although, I suppose if I were rich enough to afford, I’d be rich enough to have someone else clean it, eh?

Don’t worry, Mapgirl, I’ll put up a photo of the house off of I74 (one of my favorite houses still standing) and you can repost your story! Quite ballsy of you, by the way. I’d never do that.

Even worse than cleaning it, can you imagine trying to rehab or even just maintain a house like that? The roof alone would make most modern contractors run away, screaming…. I suppose the upkeep that a place like this would take probably accounts for some of the, uh, alterations it’s had.

Hey…while this may not be the house on the corner of Spalding and Perry, it had to have been built by the same architect. The sunroom on the side and from the look of the background, it is an exact match. I look forward to you getting picture from the same angle and posting it. By the way, I believe it is being rehabbed by Joe Hudson (who recently ran for City Councils 1st District).
