95 – The Wolfner Apartments
The Greenhut Mansion as it appears today. I did my best to get the same angle as the old photo shown in #96 to show how dramatically it was altered to the point of being unrecognizable. Infact, I questioned myself several times if it actually was the same place, and if so, did I really get the same angle? I did.
The book “Peoria Two: East/West Bluff Pre-1940″ says this: “Almost nothing is recognizable of the original Greenhut house except some basement paneling.” It is currently named “Bobbitt’s Historic Quarters”
The original Carriage House still remains, which could be the subject of a future post.

This is the mansion at Sheridan and Moss… which sadly has been carved up into apartments.

Yep, the old Greenhut mansion. The owner was a whisky baron who helped give High Street its name. I lived there and loved it. I had the top apt with the sunroom that overlooked downtown; unfortunately, I never appreciated it fully (i.e., had parties there) until after I moved.

The original gas clothes dryer is still in the basement. You had to light the pilot light for your section and hang your clothes over the tubes. I can’t do this dryer justice by explaining it, I wish I had pictures of it.

I live on the 2nd floor!!! 2200 sq feet. We can see all of downtown Peoria, all the way to the Fondulac Drive Bridge in East Peoria. It is beautiful inside! The old ballroom is on the garden level, and is currently an apartment.
They say that our elevator is “the oldest operating elevator in the state of Illinois”. It has a heavy metal door and a metal gate that must be manually opened.
