53 – Japanese Bridge in Lower Bradley Park

The Japanese Bridge in Lower Bradley Park, which originally led to the Japanese Gardens. The Japanese Gardens and Pagoda were understandably destroyed after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor. Why the bridge was spared, I don’t know.

Springdale Cemetary’s Soldier’s Hill, lest we forget why we all had a day off. I hope “Gary” and all else had a great Memorial Day weekend.

I can’t seem to find much information on this, nor can I find when it was torn down, although I swore I saw it somewhere. I’ll update if/when I find it.

Funny striping on North University near Detweiller Drive.

Josh has it. This is what used to be a 4 lane road, just recently turned into a 2 lane road with a turn lane.

(Maubs, that certainly is ATS is on the right)

46 – Lower Gate House, Springdale Cemetary

Mapgirl knows her stuff! I didn’t know that this was the “lower gate house”, of Springdale Cemetary but she sounds pretty confident so I’ll go with it. It looks in need of a little TLC.

By the way- they have a great website. I’m thinking that I need to take a tour of Springdate someday…

Isn’t she lovely?

The Madison Theatre is final of the grand movie houses built in Peoria, and remains the last standing. Opened October 16, 1920, it originally featured vaudeville and silent movies. In 1980 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, but has been closed for several years due to code violations. Plans to save it are in the works.

44 – Peoria Library, Downtown Branch

Peoria_Landmark_44.jpg

What a beautiful building that I wish we could bring back. My source for this photo is a year 2000 GP Transit Calendar, which says it was the Peoria Post Office on the corner of Main and Monroe. Built in 1889 and unfortunately razed in 1938. The US Federal Building is now located at that corner, across the the library.

Though I own several Peoria books, I don’t own “Peoria… Impressions of 150 years”, so I can’t confirm or deny what Vicki says. I’m confident that this is the Post Office, but was it built in 1889 or 1899? The last thing I want to do is spread mis-information. If anyone owns that book or knows more about this, and why it was torn down, I’d love to hear it.
